About Me

The good ole days:

This picture brings back memories. As a kid I was always more of an athlete than a student. I started playing tee ball at age 4. Then joined church league basketball shortly thereafter. In the 8th grade I got serious about wrestling. And my senior year I won a state championship. The state finals was the last time I competed. Up until college, sports was a big part of my identity. At university, I was a little aimless without a sport. Sports taught me work ethic, but it didn't give me a direction. That's what Varsity Gap Year is all about. We want want to help former varstiy athletes get real world experience by bringing structure to the "fun job".  For many, joining the real world after college can be a rude awakening. Some college graduates find themselves inadvertantly taking an unplanned gap year. Instead we want to help you find your way by taking an intentional year off to make a plan and cultivate conviction about your chosen path. Then your varsity work ethic can do the rest.

My background

I caught my first wave on a study abroad trip to Costa Rica. Teaching myself to surf was one of the most frustrating things I have ever done as an athlete. It took me 3 months to catch a good wave, but it finally paid off.   My first wave felt like I was flying. I couldn't stop smiling that day. After college I moved to the beach and wound up working at Learn to Surf LA for the next three summers. In 2009 I started Go Surf LA.

These days:

Currently, I run Go Surf LA and Learn to Surf LA together.  I merged the two surf camps in 2018 when my first boss reached out to me to take over his business. These days my focus is on creating more value in outdoor recreation by helping student athletes experience surfing with their peers over the course of a year long gap surfing program. I believe that Varsity Gap Year is the best way to experience surfing.
