Since the 70's, Harvard has recommended that all incoming freshmen take a gap year. We think this goes double for varsity athletes. Harvard and other gap year studies suggest that gap year students tend to have a more mature outlook towards school and the extra time off gives students a realistic timeframe to develop a focused academic plan before entering college.
As a varsity athlete, you have only scratched the surface of your athletic potential. While college admission offices do credit athletes for being well-rounded, most colleges do not treat athletic ability as a learning opportunity. The varsity skillset can translate to the academic setting when developed properly. Why not consider a gap year that utilizes your athletic ability?
Varsity Gap Year is part accelerated surfing program, part independent study, and part coaching apprenticeship. We will train small groups of former student athletes to surf for nine months. At the end of nine months, successful participants will be offered a summer job at surf camp. All the while you will develop conviction about the road ahead.
